I opened another blog, Blanc et Bleu where you can find my latest <a href="http://blancetbleushop.blogspot.com/2014/01/happy-new-year.html">post</a>.<br />
I have been spending a lot of time in my sewing room, making bags for the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/Zakken?ref=si_shop">shop</a>, of course, and also making - trying to, at least- clothes for myself.<br />
Making things has always been a source of enjoyment for me. From curtains to quilts, from chair and sofa slipcovers to Halloween costumes for my kids (infancy through high school), and finally bags, I have completed quite a few sewing projects, but never clothes I could actually wear outside the house. Yeah, I have made a few pajama pants that I have worn - gasp- to the mailbox, but I always walk fast with my head down :)<br />
<br />
A few weeks ago, I accidently found and fell in love with <a href="http://byhandlondon.com/"> By Hand London</a> patterns. I ordered one, then another, and what the heck, I got all five (the <a href="http://byhandlondon.com/products/anna-dress">Anna</a> dress, the <a href="http://byhandlondon.com/products/georgia-dress">Georgia</a> dress, the <a href="http://byhandlondon.com/products/victoria-blazer">Victoria</a> blazer, the <a href="http://byhandlondon.com/products/elisalex-dress">Elisalex</a> dress, and the <a href="http://byhandlondon.com/products/charlotte-skirt">Charlotte</a> skirt). Those ladies at By Hand London are seriously talented. I adore the booklet of directions they send with each pattern, so much easier to handle than the giant sheet you get with other patterns. In addition, those lovely ladies have "sewalongs" with tons of pictures, super helpful when you have to put in invisible zippers, for example...<br />
<br />
My first experience with their pattern was the <a href="http://byhandlondon.com/blogs/by-hand-london/11628829-please-welcome-the-polly-top-sewing-pattern-oh-yes-and-shes-free">Polly Top</a>, a super easy - even for me- and free pattern. I used a floral quilting weight fabric for my muslin. The sizing was perfect, as were the directions. For my "real" Polly Top, I am planning to use a scrumptious silk in burnt orange and green, and leftover rayon from my Anna dress (see further down). Both fabric are drapey and they will make a perfect Polly Top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipwXfDYZ2ybFUqONLYPWs3TmM8HpC8rQvDvw4dmR3k2l1SY4cWQhu4TM1XCYKxD1QCJXk3r7lF8kY73hFyMGUn3vw9C53l8sTvyueyRx2t8IxKGcA-Uk0dSLTBVrymtz55JipbmQ6DYSX3/s1600/DSC_0322.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipwXfDYZ2ybFUqONLYPWs3TmM8HpC8rQvDvw4dmR3k2l1SY4cWQhu4TM1XCYKxD1QCJXk3r7lF8kY73hFyMGUn3vw9C53l8sTvyueyRx2t8IxKGcA-Uk0dSLTBVrymtz55JipbmQ6DYSX3/s1600/DSC_0322.JPG" height="320" width="310" /></a></div>
My second try was the Charlotte skirt. Again, easy to follow directions and perfect sizing. I used some upholstery fabric ( from my dining room chairs). The weight- if not so much the floral pattern- is perfect for a winter skirt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwdKHqsrwRPoJyt8rxTn6iRKyEHGlOmVTsRnGaexAaoEBMFsTZ4W58fpbGi8ZbVRYqZTF1LPF16qqNERMOj0gnSeC-pYrQA91DHQh6_LnLDB4hRLtIWHlYUSuytnfJpHuQoLwBna5mgIBT/s1600/DSC_0321.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwdKHqsrwRPoJyt8rxTn6iRKyEHGlOmVTsRnGaexAaoEBMFsTZ4W58fpbGi8ZbVRYqZTF1LPF16qqNERMOj0gnSeC-pYrQA91DHQh6_LnLDB4hRLtIWHlYUSuytnfJpHuQoLwBna5mgIBT/s1600/DSC_0321.JPG" height="320" width="310" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since I was not really planning on wearing this skirt, I did not quite finish the waistband- you can still see some pins there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the size US6 with no alterations, but I did chopped off a good six inches from the bottom. It is now a very comfortable knee length and does not need a back vent.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Emboldened by my success with the two patterns, I made not one but TWO Anna dresses. Yep, two!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first one is my wearable muslin- or toile...love that word :)- made with quilting weight cotton from Grey's Fabrics. I thought I was buying medium weight cotton, as indicated in the description, but I was a little disappointed to find that it is really thin, like my stash of quilting cotton. Oh well, it is still very pretty.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made the midi length for this dress, and I think it will look really cute with white sandals or flats this summer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid_PqnemnRbb_L6b91xdI6lo0feg9H9VlGpoxgufaXmDtvJnHZJvwl-AtywyvSMCQ1tYGtAtp_DdiLT7WBBvtN-uMEFpMMdPoiYYibzG7zQ5v-nc6lQyiK9fhWLF4r_4FcJQ8F-REYs2hQ/s1600/DSC_0329.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid_PqnemnRbb_L6b91xdI6lo0feg9H9VlGpoxgufaXmDtvJnHZJvwl-AtywyvSMCQ1tYGtAtp_DdiLT7WBBvtN-uMEFpMMdPoiYYibzG7zQ5v-nc6lQyiK9fhWLF4r_4FcJQ8F-REYs2hQ/s1600/DSC_0329.JPG" height="318" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small; text-align: left;">I am very proud of my first try at inserting an invisible zipper and matching seams!<br /></span></td></tr>

<div>
And finally, Anna number 2. I constructed this one with a black and light green rayon I found on Etsy, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/StevieSaintJohn?ref=l2-shopheader-name">here</a>. Stephanie has a ton of reasonably priced fabrics, AND she will send you free fabric samples. How nice is that?</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipWcCeN8_ip5XuMtzoQ604Wc0K0phQnMpkcl2f_6GYzQA2hDI0Oji_zLmjwsjUmstTae-uIR2y63W1YYo7mMDb-Eq53zc4wmhb-OKyOoVB1ptbwPIU6IuqLHS4mBIbZyMK6lXeJqh-aIhF/s1600/DSC_0333.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipWcCeN8_ip5XuMtzoQ604Wc0K0phQnMpkcl2f_6GYzQA2hDI0Oji_zLmjwsjUmstTae-uIR2y63W1YYo7mMDb-Eq53zc4wmhb-OKyOoVB1ptbwPIU6IuqLHS4mBIbZyMK6lXeJqh-aIhF/s1600/DSC_0333.JPG" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The fabric was a little more challenging to handle than the above mentioned cotton, because it is so light and slippery, but I managed :). </div>
<div>
Because I love long dresses for summer, I made this dress full length, but without the slit. I really want to be able to wear it to school and the dress is very comfortable to walk in (and run in- yes I tried) without the slit.</div>
<div>
Because of its flowing skirt and fitted bodice, the Anna is very slimming. Another plus in my book!</div>
<div>
The hem is not finished yet, as I am waiting to see what shoes I will wear- saw a pair of fabulous Eileen Fischer sandals, sadly with a price tag out in the stratosphere. </div>
<div>
The seams are finished with French seams (he he). I have a lot of practice with those because I use this techinique to finish the inside of my bags. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOscrYWW3uoFdbydk4ovBjcQcUn6KxnY-JJA8fBXD6Fyt1SkLjh18Ji6VEodC-FO34vVRIzgYc0ICpVHSC_XS6WmD3AX1wHzFogjHcEhRvmwXAt8KhqmoyOqbmJp0zz6tkQXHMs0TaRHQU/s1600/DSC_0338.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOscrYWW3uoFdbydk4ovBjcQcUn6KxnY-JJA8fBXD6Fyt1SkLjh18Ji6VEodC-FO34vVRIzgYc0ICpVHSC_XS6WmD3AX1wHzFogjHcEhRvmwXAt8KhqmoyOqbmJp0zz6tkQXHMs0TaRHQU/s1600/DSC_0338.JPG" height="175" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
I may have made the hems a bit on the wide side (see above picture) due to the fact that for the last couple of years I have been sewing heavy duty waxed canvas and now I need to get used to sewing delicate fabrics.</div>
<div>
All in all, I am pleased with the results.</div>
<div>
What are you making these days?</div>

The Waxed Canvas Weekender is finally in the shop!<br />
I just love those big weekend bags. They conjure up visions of stolen weekends in exotic places, adventures in faraway lands, spur-of-the-moment trips... I have been working on a pattern for several months now, maybe a year. There are a couple of prototypes sitting dejectedly on the floor of my sitting room. So sad...<br />
This week, since I was on break, I decided to tackle the project -again- and bring it to fruition.<br />
Introducing (drum roll please) the Zakken <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/171158127/waxed-canvas-and-leather-weekender?ref=shop_home_active">Waxed Canvas Weekender</a> ...<br />

It is a beautiful, large duffle bag with leather handles, an exterior pocket, and two interior slip pockets.<br />
Check it out <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/171158127/waxed-canvas-and-leather-weekender?ref=shop_home_active">here</a>.<span id="goog_631480886"></span><span id="goog_631480887"></span><br />
I have a couple of new items in the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/Zakken?ref=si_shop">shop</a> that would make great stocking stuffers, like the<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/170685486/leather-pouch-medium-leather-pouch?ref=shop_home_active"> mini leather pouches</a> in brown, black, cream, apple green, electric blue and silver. They are large enough to hold your cell phone, small wallet, lip balm and keys, and small enough to fit in your purse to keep everything tidy.<br />

You can see the Recycled Wool Clutches in the previous post (or <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/170704449/wool-and-leather-fold-over-clutch?ref=listing-shop-header-2">here</a> and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/170705473/wool-and-leather-clutch-recycled-wool?ref=listing-shop-header-1">here</a>).<br />
As you know I just love waxed canvas, the richness of the feel and the multitude of applications.<br />
I designed a new waxed canvas clutch with an oiled leather bottom,elegant and very luxurious.<br />

One is a foldover clutch, lined in pure linen,and the other a regular zippered clutch with eco friendly canvas lining and an interior leather pocket.<br />
They are both made from recycled Pendleton wool in browns and greens. They both feature a chocolate brown leather bottom.<br />

It has served me well, but it is starting to show its age.<br />
A couple of weeks ago, I was browsing on Etsy, looking for either a fabulous clutch or an equally fabulous pattern, when I came upon this pattern by Janelle at Emmaline Bags: the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/127996673/the-necessary-clutch-wallet-sewing?ref=favs_view_3">Necessary Clutch</a>.<br />
I thought about it for a few days, and then decided to go ahead and buy it. The price was reasonable and if I didn't like the final result, well, I could always keep looking...<br />
This pattern is simply A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!<br />
It was delivered via instant download to my email- LOVE that! I immediately printed the pattern, and started looking at fabrics. OK, I could have made about ten different wallets in twenty different fabrics, but I had to restrain myself. So I picked a lovely out-of-print Amy Butler fabric in green and chocolate for the exterior and pockets, with eco-friendly brown cotton duck for lining.<br />
The tutorial is extremely well thought out and easy to understand, with pictures galore. Every step is well explained and the pattern itself is pure genius. The only thing I did a bit differently was to mark the credit card pockets in pencil on the wrong side, and in tailor's chalk on the right side of the fabric. It really helped me make sharp and accurate folds- I am not used to working with small items, the bags I usually make for my Etsy shop being much bigger than the wallet :)<br />
I finished the clutch in about two hours- it took me MUCH longer than that to pick the fabrics.<br />
I love this wallet: there is plenty of room for credit cards, cash, coins, receipts, and even a smart phone- OK, I don't have one yet, but I am getting one soon - I think the Smithsonian really, really wants my flip phone ASAP :)<br />
I love the tailored and overall polished look of the wallet. The twist lock gives it a really professional finish.<br />
<br />
Now, I am already thinking about Christmas gifts, oh and how about a holiday themed clutch- for me of course- and I know the clutch would look great in this floral pattern that I love, and... OK Janelle, you have created a monster :)<br />
Check out this pattern, you won't regret it. Janelle also has other bag patterns in her Etsy <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/EmmalineBags?ref=l2-shopheader-name">shop</a>, I am sure as well thought out as the Necessary Clutch.<br />
Take a look at the pictures below and let me know what you think of my first- and certainly not last- Necessary Clutch from Emmaline Bags.<br />

I created a couple of mini pouches, great for small items such as markers, embroidery supplies, or make-up essentials.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6e0qUjBqEL-_4UdViaCcOZXlxmnoRFvVe2EguqrCTWDkijv3ceB79lPQp3uBRM4vZ6COl8GV4e0kq85Y6ApKuBrkW324vemKS3gPpaZtA89ZErxuF01KCaK43byQri-UtmV31f3S_fkA/s1600/mini+pouches+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6e0qUjBqEL-_4UdViaCcOZXlxmnoRFvVe2EguqrCTWDkijv3ceB79lPQp3uBRM4vZ6COl8GV4e0kq85Y6ApKuBrkW324vemKS3gPpaZtA89ZErxuF01KCaK43byQri-UtmV31f3S_fkA/s320/mini+pouches+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is my personal favorite in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/157927528/waxed-canvas-zippered-mini-pouch?ref=listing-shop-header-3">gray</a> with a turquoise zipper.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Small but mighty, the mini pouch in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/157927840/waxed-canvas-zippered-mini-pouch?ref=listing-shop-header-3">cream</a> with a lemon yellow zipper<br />

The fire engine red zipper on this <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/157938263/waxed-canvas-zippered-mini-pouch?ref=listing-shop-header-2">one</a> really makes it pop!<br />

As you probably heard, a fire broke out in Black Forest on Tuesday, June 11, around 1:45. The fire devastated almost 500 homes, burned over 15,000 acres, and caused the death of two people.<br />
This is what it looked like from my house on June 11 at 4:00 pm. The fire started about 3 miles - as the crow flies- from our neighborhood.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi6QEq_TLsHPwQrQDjIl1fm3IcU-N1yOMc2LbscbL1hhw4h0fG6CzRS0xb0guPRHcAhU8TXrKUcvjH5eeCrm_jodj18eRpq05XaJy5kNnyFXO3Uupi0sQ6Sm-_VZhyphenhyphen7T1Pm3w1w4zhV74E/s1600/black+forest+fire+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi6QEq_TLsHPwQrQDjIl1fm3IcU-N1yOMc2LbscbL1hhw4h0fG6CzRS0xb0guPRHcAhU8TXrKUcvjH5eeCrm_jodj18eRpq05XaJy5kNnyFXO3Uupi0sQ6Sm-_VZhyphenhyphen7T1Pm3w1w4zhV74E/s320/black+forest+fire+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
By Wednesday, our area was on pre-evacuation, which is a nice way to say: take a look around your house and decide on what you will take if the fire gets any closer, take pictures of your furniture for the insurance company, and be ready to go in 30 minutes or less.</div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNJeU2Xh036qU_lv30BbLKkz_7koeLFfgyKfWOcddUy_dwrabKa3UlpaVYvI3TRc8ug98Sin0kCxJG_ByfDIN5TXipynh63W74agfm5N50hIWacg_RidMU8aVdsODsUHD0J_giXJXFko24/s1600/B+F+fire+6+12+008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNJeU2Xh036qU_lv30BbLKkz_7koeLFfgyKfWOcddUy_dwrabKa3UlpaVYvI3TRc8ug98Sin0kCxJG_ByfDIN5TXipynh63W74agfm5N50hIWacg_RidMU8aVdsODsUHD0J_giXJXFko24/s320/B+F+fire+6+12+008.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Wednesday afternoon from the driveway</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By Thursday midday, the mandatory evacuation boundary was moved to within 300 yards of our house. With the wind blowing like mad, all bets were off, and we knew that we might have to leave.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The neighbors started to go. One after the other, we watched them pack their Suburbans and drive away. The street was eerily quiet after a while. I thought I would stay until I was told to go by the sheriff's department.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While my husband was gathering important papers and passports, the first things I grabbed were pictures of my children. I also packed my jewelry box filled with not so much jewelry, but my kids' baby teeth and handmade mother's day cards. After that, I threw some clothes in a suitcase- just enough to last for a few days. I filled a box with each of my kids' favorite things (stuffed animals, yearbooks, school stuff). I put my laptops and iPad in a bag, along with my schoolbooks- hey, I might have some time to plan my lessons in the middle of all this...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I packed a silver sugar spoon that my grandmother had put aside for me - her last grandchild-, I filled a basket with fresh fruit and a couple bottles of wine that were on the counter- we might need a drink somewhere along the way, I watered my plants, just in case... I folded five baskets of laundry...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was filled with a feeling of sadness at the thought of losing my stuff- my several hundred books, my sewing machines, my fabrics, my antiques- , while at the same time knowing that we were lucky to be able to prepare ourselves and exit safely with whatever was precious to us.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As it turned out we did not have to evacuate. The boundaries were moved back on Saturday. Most of the neighbors came back then. Many evacuees were allowed back into their homes yesterday. Some are still not allowed to go back.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a close call, and a wake-up call. We are still reeling from all the emotions- happiness the fire is under control, sadness at the devastation, fear, stress, relief it's over. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We are making plans to cut down more scrub oak ( a very flammable tree) and to replace it with apple trees, maybe. We want to be better at organizing things, maybe donate a few things we don't need...Less clutter is good...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, what would you take with you?</div>

The warm temperatures inspired me to start my seeds. I know it's late by most gardeners' standards, but since I can't safely set out my plants until early to mid-June, I think it will be OK.<br />
Aside from the warmth, I was also inspired by a couple of gardening books by Gayla Trail: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0743270142/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER">You grow girl</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Grow-Great-Grub-Organic-Spaces/dp/0307452018/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_y">Grow great grub</a>, and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Growing-Organic-Edible-Flowers/dp/0307886875/ref=pd_sim_b_5">Easy growing</a>. There are plenty of pictures and amusing anecdotes, simple recipes, and great tips. My kind of gardening book!<br />

We are dealing with a mole or two digging tunnels in the vegetable raised bed. The little critters are actually aerating the soil, so we are not too concerned about it at this point. We did sprinkle some castor oil around the tunnels in hopes that the mole will have moved elsewhere by the time I have to plant.Genevievehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10732228363227438295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7646060584786816216.post-74175581402848535402013-04-28T07:39:00.000-07:002013-04-28T07:39:02.958-07:00My first wholesale orderThis month I was contacted by a shop owner from Austin, Texas. Since I have owned Natalie's books for a couple of months, I have been poring over them and making lists of projects to make.<br />
I started with a napkin to take to school, in the spirit of reusing things and reducing the usage of paper napkins. I keep the napkin in my drawer and bring it home from time to time to toss in the laundry. It is light pink with a gray border. Sorry no pix :(<br />
The next project I picked was the tote bag because I wanted to practice the reverse applique technique. Here are a couple of pictures of the work in progress:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF32QW7Gk80y0oUWGtxniCFSZExFB0-d24ivMCN4P6aLWrYQwJqyLvhCwricVj-F8rU7r33mKjLFGmsbuCCb2lW9RGfnuB7NoGQri_vbYS0FAysb5KjEggteCJ0TeeJVyyrjYcWdr3KF_O/s1600/alabama+bag+and+gray+samples+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF32QW7Gk80y0oUWGtxniCFSZExFB0-d24ivMCN4P6aLWrYQwJqyLvhCwricVj-F8rU7r33mKjLFGmsbuCCb2lW9RGfnuB7NoGQri_vbYS0FAysb5KjEggteCJ0TeeJVyyrjYcWdr3KF_O/s320/alabama+bag+and+gray+samples+002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I traced the stencil with permanent marker and stitched around the shapes with dark gray embroidery floss. I cheated a bit by using my own pattern for the tote- a folded over piece of fabric with square corners. I also used my brand new serger for the project...worked like a charm...<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I finished the top with a topstitch- by hand, if you please- in dark gray embroidery floss. I did not split the thread, so the stitch makes more of a statement, while providing added support for the handles.</div>

So, what have you been making lately?</div>

It is a Juki 654 DE, and so far, I love it!<br />
It's taken me a couple of tries to get the thread tension right- my studio trashcan is full of strips of fabric that have been serged on both sides... From wool sweaters to waxed canvas and every fabric scrap in between, my little serger has serged everything.<br />
The big plan is to use the serger to seam the large Weekender I have been working on. I was toying with a couple of different ideas: #1, using French seams, or #2, lining the bag.<br />
Solution # 1 will not work very well because of the thickness of the canvas and the bulkiness of the bag itself- it will be hard to put through the sewing machine; solution number 2 will add weight to an already pretty hefty bag. Hence the serging of the inside seams...Brilliant!<br />
<br />
Back to today's projects. Spring may be coming soon to your neck of the woods, but here winter is not giving up. We had a small blizzard yesterday, and even though the sun is out today, it is below freezing. The high winds make it feel like Siberia- not that I have ever been there, but I can only imagine...<br />
<br />
I found a stash of old wool sweaters that *somebody* must have put in the dryer at some point. After looking for design ideas on the internet, I came up with my own pair of arm warmers-<br />

Are they cute or what???<br />
BTW, it is really hard to take a picture of one's arm :)<br />
The most difficult part was the thumb hole. You have to serge the edge of two strips of wool (the ones around the hand, in my case the brown strip and the narrow striped strip) from the seam side for about 1.5" before you seam the strips together. Of course you will stop the seam where the edging begins. When you do your long seam- the one that goes along the arm- , you will have what looks like a buttonhole on one side of the seam through which to put your thumb.<br />
<br />
My other weekend project is to finish making a cover for a vintage camp cot that I purchased on ebay last Fall.<br />
I removed the dirty white cover and made one out of 12 oz. canvas in graphite. The cover in the picture is actually the second try. The first cover was way too tight and the fabric resonated like a drum if you dropped a coin on it - yes, we tried :)<br />
I was afraid that the seams would give away if someone over one hundred pounds sat on the cot- it is supposed to serve as casual seating in Julie's new house.<br />

The pillows really complement the gray color. The front is a large mod floral pattern, the back is a tiny cream and black check- see picture above. The pillow covers are removable to allow for a change in color scheme. I guess I'd better get cracking on more pillow covers.<br />

Actually, I rarely watch TV aside from the news channels. However, there is this one show that I love to watch when I have the time: "Chopped".<br />
I turn it on when I am cooking dinner sometimes, and I get caught up in the frenzy of chopping, dicing, and putting strange ingredients together for a delicious dish. Yes, I even talk to myself: "Come on, one more minute, plate your dishes!".<br />
About two weeks ago, I watched a very special show. The competing chefs were school cafeteria cooks, two of them from Colorado. It was amazing to see those ladies cook and help each other during the competition- not your typical "Chopped" episode.<br />
Just like during any other episode, one chef was chopped after each dish- to the profound dismay of the others. One of the judges was Sam Kass, one of the White House chefs.<br />
At the end of the show, of course, only one chef was still standing, and she was awarded the $10,000 prize.<br />
To everyone's surprise, Ted Allen called the other contestants back in the studio. They were each awarded $5,000 and an invitation to spend the day at the White House with Sam Kass, visiting the kitchen, the kitchen garden as well as having lunch there. Everybody was very emotional, the judges, the contestants, and I am sure 95% of the viewing audience- yes, I had to grab a couple of tissues as well :)<br />
What a classy ending! I love "Chopped"!!!<br />

After painstakingly taking several pairs of jeans apart, cutting the denim into sewing pieces, and stitching them together in a patchwork design that works, I made what I think is one of my best totes. I used one of my favorite floral prints for the lining, with a fun, matching stripe for the slip pocket.<br />
The handles are long enough to wear the bag over the shoulder. Just for fun, I added a key ring to the end of a handle (visible in the first picture).<br />
I am thinking book bag, market bag, BEACH bag!!! I know, thinking way ahead here...<br />

I am currently working on a new waxed canvas tote -with lots of leather - and a men's wallet. I still need to learn to stitch leather in a straight line. If anybody out there has an idea on how to accomplish that, please let me know.<br />
Take care,<br />

Well, not so much. I love to learn to make new crafts, even - and especially- when they are not related to sewing bags.<br />
Several weeks ago, I saw a beautiful wrapped leather bracelet. Ooooo, I need this, I thought.... except for the price tag...<br />
So, I went online and I found a couple of excellent tutorials: <br />

Joann's had a 40% sale on beads when I went searching for supplies. I bought plastic beads to practice with, and glass beads in various sizes and shades for the real thing. Here is the result:<br />

My current project is a large weekend bag in waxed canvas and leather. I was debating whether to line it or not. I am leaning toward lining. I tried to finish the seams with bias tape, but it doesn't look so hot. More on that later...</div>

Bags, Boas, and Light DustingIt is hard to believe it is already November. October came and went very quickly.<br />
The leather Zen Bag has been pretty popular this year, so when I found some gorgeous suede in chocolate and caramel at the leather store, I just had to try the Zen in suede.<br />
The colors are great for fall and winter. I love the luxurious feel of the suede and the thickness of it too. The bags stand pretty much on their own.<br />

<br />
Gorgeous, don't you think?<br />
<br />
Back in September, I purchased three books by Natalie Chanin: Alabama Stitch Book, Alabama Studio Style, and Alabama Studio Sewing + Design. I just adore the simplicity of the looks, the easy patterns, the detailed explanations and the beautiful pictures. So far, I have made a bolero, an unadorned poncho, and I am currently working on two projects: a reverse applique poncho and a scarf- the Rag Boa.<br />
<br />
The scarf-<br />
The Rag Boa is from Natalie Chanin's first book,Alabama Stitch Book.<br />
I am making it for a colleague and a friend *S* who just had surgery to remove most of her pancreas, spleen and gallbladder, in addition to having just completed radiotherapy after breast cancer surgery.<br />
Why a scarf, and a Rag Boa at that, you will ask? Well a couple of years ago, my friend S and I went to New Orleans for a teacher workshop. She had never been there and loved the city, the food, and the "laissez-les-bons-temps-rouler" attitude of the locals. We went into many gift shops and S purchased quite a few feather boas and gaudy plastic rings. You know, she said, when things get bad at school, we will lock ourselves in the principal's office, we will dress up with the boas and the rings, and I am sure it will make us feel better- at least laugh our heads off for a while... Stress relief...<br />
I wanted to make something special for S, something that would remind her of happy times past and future, something that would feel like a hug, and something she could actually wear outside of the principal's office.<br />
As I was perusing the Chanin book, my eyes fell upon the title: Rag Boa. Perfect! I chose pink and gray for the colors.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWLzOwV2K2bC6NdPmLvDDEhXrvNkjzv59v30rpkNK0XuRpSsba7MmkvheiuU6ofFJ-gaamo7D8142Rh5lwsNdr4saYn6nh_AyPcPjQl6dqkHje6JHjTF0tLdQDpNku1E0VxdYc1MVegZwk/s1600/boa+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWLzOwV2K2bC6NdPmLvDDEhXrvNkjzv59v30rpkNK0XuRpSsba7MmkvheiuU6ofFJ-gaamo7D8142Rh5lwsNdr4saYn6nh_AyPcPjQl6dqkHje6JHjTF0tLdQDpNku1E0VxdYc1MVegZwk/s320/boa+002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I was reading somewhere, perhaps in the book, that Natalie gave a similar boa to a friend who wears it and uses the end of it for dusting. It made me smile, I can so see S doing that.<br />
My boa will serve several purposes: it will look pretty with almost anything, keep S warm, hopefully feel like a friend's hug, ....and keep the furniture clean.<br />
<br />
Thank you Natalie, for your beautiful books, wonderful accessories, and for sharing them all with the rest of us.<br />
<br />
Take care of yourselves-Genevievehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10732228363227438295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7646060584786816216.post-89798340208888406622012-10-03T18:35:00.003-07:002012-10-03T18:35:36.415-07:00Sale in my Bag du Jour shopHello friends,<br />
Today really feels like the end of summer. The weather has been so unseasonably nice that I felt like winter would stay away forever. Oh boy, was I wrong...<br />
It is getting chilly, it is windy, and *sigh* the boys brought in my potted orange, lime, and lemon trees as well as the fig tree (with a couple of figs on it) and the zucchini planter- oh yes, the potted grapevine too.<br />
The above mentioned plants have been living outside for four months- at 7,500 feet, a spectacular feat.<br />
The tomatoes are still coming, so I made a cover for them with the heavy duty plastic that is wrapped around my lovely fabric bolts. Talk about re-purposing!<br />
<br />
I am thinking of closing my Bag du Jour shop on Etsy <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/BagDuJour">http://www.etsy.com/shop/BagDuJour</a>. It is very, very, quiet, and I sell tons more on Zakken. I have a bunch of ready-to-ship bags and I am offering a 20% discount coupon (bagdujour20). Here is a small sample of the goodies:<br />
